Description
- Cambodia has the lowest rural sanitation coverage in the region. Sustainable water access remains a challenge, with high rates of inoperable water facilities.
- Increasing rural access to safe, conveniently located water and sanitary latrines is a high priority for the Cambodian government because they dramatically improve health and living standards as well as promote social and economic development. The national strategy for Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (RWSSH) led by the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) aims to provide safe drinking water to all in Cambodia by 2025.
- Though many NGOs implement such projects in Cambodia, the main challenges are logistics and cost. The greatest need is in the rural and remote areas, especially areas that are difficult to access due to challenging road conditions.
- Emaan Foundation Cambodia has started the Clean Water and Sanitation project for poor rural villagers since 2017 that has benefited more than 3500 beneficiaries. The project is based on 5 principles to ensure its sustainability and quality:
- Identify the real needs of communities and beneficiaries regardless of location
- Encourage the participation and ownership from beneficiaries and community
- Serving all beneficiaries regardless of religion and ethnicity, unless it’s specified by donor
- Periodic water quality test and follow-up on the usage and state of water-wells
- Engage local authority and partners in planning and implementation.
